A little about me and this site:-
I am Terry Thornton, 49 years young, married to Christine my long suffering wife for 26 years and living in the county of South Yorkshire in England.
I  would like to take this opportunity to explain that I do not intend this to be anything more than a collection of my own photographs, words and feelings about my garden and the plants and creatures that live in it or visit. I will try to be informative, but all advice will be based on my own experiences. We can all get hold of books for  further information on all aspects of gardening, but I do believe that here on the World Wide Web we  seek  more personal contact and I hope that a little of that comes through to you.

We live in what I would call an unsettled temperate climate, but without real extremes, no hurricanes, no earthquakes, fairly mild winters -10C (14F) for short periods, more usually not below -5C (23F), summer temperatures usually not above 27C (80F). Rainfall is generally adequate for growing a good range of garden plants, although we do have dry spells and with no real depth of soil this does occasionally cause problems.

However we do have one extreme that no doubt all gardeners can relate to. SLUGS and I mean lots and lots and lots of large 4 inches (10cm) plant disposal units. More, much more on these perishers and our long running battle with them later.

I started gardening here when we first moved into a newly built bungalow about 20 years ago. As is usually the case we inherited a waste land from which the present garden has slowly evolved, and as with most gardens continues to do so. This happens with my assistance, but quite often it also happens in spite of my efforts.
To the front of the property is a small garden about 30 foot (9.2m) long from wall of bungalow to back edge of pavement by 40 foot (12.2m) wide. This started life as a rockery/alpine garden, but is at the moment evolving into something else, the identity of which is still undecided.

The main garden to the rear of the property is about 80 foot (24.4m) long by 40 foot (12.2m) wide. It is at the low end of a North facing slope and receives no sun for about 3 months in winter.
I must point out that I am no expert gardener and my year usually sees quite a few failures. These also I will try to include, this way we can all perhaps learn and assist each other. I am always open to advice, and will try to include a little of what I receive from you in here as well. So please email me, with your comments, suggestions and advice.
Despite the lack of sunshine I usually have something in flower for almost every day of the year. The garden is fairly natural (lazy gardener) and attracts quite a lot of smaller wildlife. My aim is to bring a little of this to you with words and photographs.

One of my other interests is the keeping and breeding of exotic birds, mainly finches, and the rear garden has two sheds and an aviary to accommodate these.
Spread around the garden are a number of ponds/water features that serve as homes to pond plants, a number of fish, newts, frogs and a large assortment of smaller aquatic creatures.
